The Santa Maria Times reports that this housing downturn has been particularly tough on the local economy. Employment growth for the area was essentially flat, and adjusted for inflation the median income for the county showed a decline. However, not all housing news was negative. Research shows that of the 255 residential building permits issued in Santa Barbara County, 166 of those units were in Santa Maria. Also, existing home sales and loan applications have increased.

A total of 20 homes were reported sold in Los Alamos CA in 2008. Sold listings averaged approximately 95 days on market, 1950 square feet, and $209 per square feet. The lowest resale was a ranch style bank owned home built in 2000 on almost a quarter acre which sold for $310,000. The highest sale was a new solar powered home on Foxen Lane which sold for $620,000.
